Transforming Structured Data into Graphs: Graph Neural Networks for Credit Risk Prediction in P2P Lending
Yiting Liu is a PhD candidate at the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the University of Twente, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. His research focuses on data-driven modeling of complex financial systems, with particular emphasis on graph-based machine learning, network analysis, and interpretable models for financial risk assessment. In his doctoral work, he investigates how relationships between entities can be represented as graphs to improve prediction and understanding of credit risk in peer-to-peer lending markets. His broader research interests include graph neural networks, structured data modeling, regime detection, and explainable artificial intelligence in financial applications.

MSCA Digital Finance Network

This workshop is organized as part of the MSCA Digital Finance network (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions), a European research and training network advancing the frontiers of artificial intelligence in digital finance.

The network brings together researchers and industry professionals across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to advance research in AI applications for digital finance. Key focus areas include machine learning for risk management, natural language processing for financial text analysis, blockchain and DeFi security, and explainable AI for regulatory compliance.

Through this collaboration, the network fosters knowledge transfer between academic institutions and the financial industry, training the next generation of researchers in quantitative finance, data science, and financial technology.

News & Announcements

Feb 23, 2026
New Research Project -- "Artificial Intelligence for Digital Finance": We are delighted to announce that this project has been funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) through the Leading House MENA program (grant CCG-2025-05), with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) as host institution and primary partner. We investigate how artificial intelligence and machine learning are transforming financial services across radically different regulatory environments -- from Swiss precision regulation to the rapidly evolving frameworks of Gulf and broader MENA markets. The project is structured around four thematic research areas: (1) Large Language Models in financial services -- from document analysis and regulatory interpretation to customer-facing applications; (2) Blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) -- examining smart contract risk, cross-border settlement, and the intersection of Islamic finance principles with DeFi architectures; (3) AI-driven risk management -- including tail-risk modeling, systemic risk early-warning systems, and algorithmic trading in illiquid markets; and (4) Financial inclusion through AI -- how AI-powered credit scoring, mobile payment systems, and digital banking can extend access to underserved populations across the MENA region. A cross-cutting theme throughout is explainable AI (XAI) for regulatory compliance: we examine how institutions can deploy powerful ML models while satisfying transparency and accountability requirements that differ markedly between Swiss, UAE, and international frameworks. We are also deeply committed to capacity building: doctoral workshops for 20+ early-career researchers with structured mentorship pairings between senior Swiss and MENA faculty, creating the next generation of researchers in this field. A follow-up workshop in Switzerland is planned for 2027 to consolidate findings and deepen the partnership. Co-chaired by Prof. Joerg Osterrieder (FHGR), Prof. Stephen Chan (AUS), Prof. Yuanyuan Zhang (AUS), and Prof. Hana Sulieman (AUS). Full project details →
